Crime

While Brunei is far safer than many other places it is not crime free. Part of the problem is that it is easy to become complacent in what is a very safe, peaceful environment.

Most crime is fairly 'petty', pick-pocketing, theft from cars (sometimes when you're in the car!), there have also been a few mugging incidents in underground carparks. However, burglary is probably the most significant crime affecting expats. Expat home are actually quite commonly targeted so you do need to take sensible precautions. Most of the crimes are opportunist and the greatest opportunity presents itself when your all your stuff arrives and is still neatly packed away. A truck drives up and men in boiler suits remove all the boxes and belongings from the house, frequently under the watchful eyes of the neighbours who simply assume you are moving house again.
Also, watch out when you are away. Be careful who you tell that you are going on holiday and take precautions if you can. It's another good reason to have a full-time live-in amah.

All this said, don't worry, Brunei Darussalam realy does deserve it's title as the "Abode of Peace".
