Telephone & Internet Services

Telephone - Landline

There is only one 'official' landline provider JTB (Jabatan Telekom Brunei). Overseas (IDD) calls are quite expensive although the cost has dropped significantly over the last few years. There are various economy options available - if you can stand the poor line quality. To use the 'Economy Call' service simply dial '098' instead of '00' when dialing internationally. There is a $500 deposit to set up a landline but the process is usually fairly quick - just make sure you have photocopies of any and all documents.

Internet

Brunet

The main provider is Brunet which offers both dial-up and ADSL (E-Speed) services. Again, the cost may be a little higher than you are used to but the service has improved considerably of late and customer service do try and help if you are having difficulties. That said, there are occasional problems and emails are 'lost' without either the sender or receiver being aware of any difficulties. It is worth using a reciept or aknowledgement system system to ensure that your important messages get through.

There is also a pre-paid surfing (and telephone) service  available:

Simpur.net

Simpur is the only alternative to Brunet. Quite a few people swithched over when they first started to avoid Brunets overloading problems. Simpur is currently promoting it's wireless 'Hotspotz' services whereby you can surf the internet using your wireless laptop or PDA at various locations.

Alternatives
While there are no alternatives to the Internet Service Providers mentioned, there are other telcom possibilites. Some people use overseas based 'call-back' services. Basically, you dial a number overseas and then hang-up. This triggers an automated switchboard to call you back which provides you with an IDD line. Such services can significantly reduce your phone bill. Ask around for reccomended services.
Internet telephones can also reduce costs. Again, you should ask around or try a Google search to find the right service for you.
