The city of Kota Kinabalu is the state capital for Sabah and is the usual launch pad
for trips up Mount Kinabalu and basically to anywhere else in Sabah. The city has a
population of around 500,000 and is a mixing pot of many different cultures.
Modern amenities are plentiful as is the exotic food. Kota Kinabalu - Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort

Railcar Train at Beaufort station
Railtracks and trains are still very much in use in Sabah as it is a cheap and still popular form
of transportation to get from one place to another. This particular one ferries passengers
between Kota Kinabalu, Beaufort and Tenom, taking scenic routes on the way.

Easily accessed from Kota Kinabalu, Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is among the most favored
dive destinations in Borneo. Because the marine park is part of a larger protected ensemble that
includes the terrestrial wonders of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, the region offers the
double-splendor of land and sea. The marine life that has been spotted here includes manta rays,
turtles, lionfish, a multitude of pelagics, and tons of coral. During the krill bloom from December to
April, whale sharks are sometimes spotted here.

Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park - Magnificent beaches on Sapi Island
Pulau Sapi has one of the nicest beaches in the Park. Its clean, white sand and crystal clear
water and coral reefs fringing the shoreline makes it ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving.
Day-use facilities include a jetty, picnic shelters, barbecue pits, tables, changing rooms and toilets.
There are crab-eating monkeys on the island and other smaller birds that may frequently be seen.
The magnificent white-bellied sea eagle which is among the finest of its species in the world has
its nest on Sapi and may often be found soaring through the skies. Camping is allowed, with
the permission of the Park Warden.
